Activity #1                                                                                         Top
Rules

the rules of badminton is the first thing the students need to know
safety is the most important thing
clear the court of all shuttles before playing
stretch before playing
check the court for hazards
boundary lines for singles and doubles
service lines
service faults
proper etiquette
5 minutes

Activity #2                                                                                       Top
Basic Grip

the basic grip is used for forehand shots
grip the racket like you are shaking someone's hand
don't hold it too firmly
keep it loose but not too loose
a side-to-side wiggle should bounce the flat sides of the grip from the inside of the thumb joint to the pad of the index finger between the knuckle and the first joint
everyone get into partners and hit the shuttle around over the net
focus on using the proper grip
make sure everyone is using the proper grip
10 minutes

Activity #3                                                                                          Top
Basic Footwork

basic footwork is another key aspect of badminton
you can not hit the shuttle if you can not properly get to the shuttle
focus on moving on the "balls" of your feet
use shuffle steps (not crossovers)
footwork is important because it helps us get in the right position to perform good strokes
as well as being in the right position it is vital to be in balance
here is a tip on how to put variation into footwork exercises and make sure that the players also practice being in balance when moving into the different corners

Tip

instead of moving around and hitting from the corners you can place
shuttles that the players shall pick up from one corner and then put down in another
the shuttles are not to be thrown but placed standing on the feathers
by doing this the player need to be in balance when stepping into the
corner
begin with three shuttles in the back right corner and three shuttles in the back left corner
start in the middle of the court just behind the t-line, this is your base position
bring all of the shuttles from the back to the front
NOTE: you always need to go back to the base position when moving
everyone should do the drill two times
10 minutes

Activity #4                                                                                          Top
Footwork (with shuttles)

now have one player on the court while on person on the opposite court hits him the shuttle
the object is just to hit the shuttle over the net
focus on
shuffle steps
going back to the home position after each contact
1 minute for each person
2 times each
10 minutes

Activity #5                                                                                         Top
Overhand Clear Shot

the overhand clear shot is mainly used in singles
remember the proper grip (forehand and backhand)
body rotation
contact the shuttle at the peak of your swing
first demonstrate then tell the students to practice in partners
10 minutes

Activity #6                                                                                          Top
Doubles

pair the students up and get them to play doubles games
review the boundaries and rules for doubles
review the strategies for doubles
play games
switch every 5 minutes (blow whistle)
20 minutes

Teacher/Student Reflections

Teacher Reflection:

Did everyone get a chance to participate in the lesson today?
Were they active for the majority of the class?
Were the directions adequate for the activities in class?
Were the students confused?
Were the badminton activities geared toward their ability level?

Student Reflection:

Did I meet some or all of my specific outcomes that I had listed at the beginning of the lesson plan?
What were the positive and negative outcomes that came from this lesson?
Did the students enjoy the lesson? (Answer this question by getting feedback from the students themselves)
