Review of Proper Footwork

proper footwork is a key aspect of badminton
you can not hit the shuttle if you can not properly get to the shuttle
focus on moving on the "balls" of your feet
use shuffle steps (not crossovers)
footwork is important because it helps us get in the right position to perform good strokes
as well as being in the right position it is vital to be in balance
here is a tip on how to put variation into footwork exercises and make sure that the players also practice being in balance when moving into the different corners

Tip

instead of moving around and hitting from the corners you can place
shuttles that the players shall pick up from one corner and then put down in another
the shuttles are not to be thrown but placed standing on the feathers
by doing this the player need to be in balance when stepping into the
corner
begin with three shuttles in the back right corner and three shuttles in the back left corner
start in the middle of the court, this is your home position
bring all of the shuttles from the back to the front
NOTE: you always need to go back to the home position when moving
everyone should practice it two times
10 minutes

Activity #2                                                                                           Top
Review of Footwork (with shuttles)

now have one player on the court while on person on the opposite court hits him the shuttle
the object is just to hit the shuttle over the net
focus on shuffle steps and going back to the home position after each contact
1 minute for each person
2 times each
10 minutes

Activity #3                                                                                           Top
Net Shots

with net shots, proper footwork is essential
on a forehand drop keep the front of racket as flat as you can to the net
on a backhand drop keep the back of the racket as flat as you can to the net
the object is to get the shuttle just over the net
have one person on one side of the net, two others on the front corners on the opposite side of the net, and the extra person can just collect the shuttles
they will alternate and toss shuttles to the person active in the drill
remember to always go back to the home position
after ten shuttles switch
15 minutes

Activity #4                                                                                           Top

the court dimensions are the centre line, the doubles wide line, and the service line
have one person serve short to begin the rally

Activity #5                                                                                           Top
Smash

in the smash, the proper grip is essential (quick review)
shuffle step back
loose grip on the racket
snap of the wrist
have one partner underhand serve it (very high)
the partner smashes it down
the other partner collects the shuttle and they go again
switch after every 5
10 minutes

Activity #6                                                                                           Top
